British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Monday a new national quarantine that will last at least until mid-February to combat a new variety of the rapidly spreading coronavirus.
Johnson said the country is at "a critical time" and that cases are increasing rapidly in all parts of the country.
Under the new rules, which will take effect as soon as possible, elementary and secondary schools and universities will be closed for face-to-face learning, except for the children of essential workers.
College students won't be back until at least mid-February.
All non-essential stores and personal care services, such as hair salons, will be closed, and restaurants can only offer take out service.
As of Monday, there were 26,626 COVID patients in hospitals in England, an increase of more than 30% from a week ago.
That's 40% above the highest level of the first wave in the spring.
