The Council of the European Union sanctioned 19 Venezuelan officials on Monday "due to their role in acts and decisions that undermine democracy and the operation of the law in the country or as a result of serious human rights violations."

In a statement, he explained that the decision is a continuation of the conclusions adopted on January 25 "in view of the deteriorating situation in Venezuela after the December 2020 elections."

This measure brings the total of sanctions to 55 and they weigh against them travel bans and freezing of assets.

Added to the list were, among others, the president and vice president of the National Electoral Council of Venezuela, Indira Maira Alfonzo Izaguirre and Leonardo Enrique Morales Poleo.

In the official document, the bloc explains that these measures "are not designed to have adverse humanitarian effects or consequences for the Venezuelan population and can be reversed."

In addition, he reiterates that the European Union will continue to engage and work with all interested parties in Venezuela to promote a peaceful dialogue and a "sustainable and democratic solution to the crises in that country."

The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry rejected the sanctions on Monday.

In a statement published on their Twitter account, they defined the decision as "clumsy" and that its intention is to "negatively affect the political dialogue that is taking place in the country."

During his speech at the 46th ordinary session of the UN Human Rights Council on Monday, the questioned president of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro mentioned the report of Alena Douhan, UN special rapporteur on human rights, who called for the lifting of sanctions because "they have exacerbated the economic problems."

The president said: "This is the cry of almost 30 million Venezuelans victims of unilateral, illegal coercive measures of this multidimensional economic aggression."
