State election of Baden-Württemberg 2021: Where the Greens won

2021-03-15T15:58:49.673Z

The Greens are the clear winners of the state elections in Baden-Württemberg. But there are still CDU strongholds in the state. Where were the parties particularly strong - and where were they particularly weak? The overview.

In Baden-Württemberg a Green Prime Minister has been elected for the third time in a row, Winfried Kretschmann's party has achieved a historically good result: for a long time something like this would have been unthinkable in the former CDU bastion in the southwest of the republic.

Now the Greens have again become the strongest force and even improved their result compared to 2016.

The CDU suffered losses, but still won a majority of the votes in numerous municipalities and constituencies.

In 2002 Dieter Salomon became the first Green Mayor of a major German city in Freiburg.

The university towns in particular became strongholds of the

Greens

and were again in this election.

In the constituencies of Tübingen, Konstanz, Freiburg and Heidelberg they each gained around 40 percent.

In Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Mannheim and Ulm they were clearly the strongest force.

However, reducing your success to the cities does not go far enough.

Also in the constituencies on Lake Constance and in the southern Black Forest, the Greens' lead over the CDU is more than ten percentage points throughout.

Even in rural regions, the voting card is now green - constituencies often went to the Greens with a narrow majority.

In at least twelve of the country's 70 constituencies, the majority of the votes went to the

CDU

.

The party achieved its best results from top candidate Susanne Eisenmann in Ehingen, Biberach and Balingen, and thus on or on the edge of the Swabian Alb.

The areas between the Swabian Alb and the Black Forest and the extreme north of the country are also still largely in the hands of the CDU.

In a total of ten constituencies, the party won less than 20 percent of the vote - with the exception of the constituency of Enz, these are all large cities.

The SPD again suffered losses in Baden-Württemberg, but at least it became the third strongest force nationwide.

It achieved its best results in the Mannheim I and Heidenheim constituencies with 21.7 and 20.2 percent respectively.

However, these results are not enough to win a direct mandate.

In a total of 21 of the 70 constituencies - especially in the strongholds of the CDU - the Social Democrats even only achieved single-digit results.

The strongholds of the

FDP

can be found in the Swabian Alb, in the Black Forest and between Stuttgart and Heilbronn.

In a total of 40 of the 70 constituencies, the Liberals secured at least 10 percent of the vote.

They got their weakest results consistently in university cities, but remained above the 5 percent mark in all constituencies.

In the state elections in 2016, the

AfD

won almost one direct mandate in Mannheim and Pforzheim.

In both constituencies, the party lost it to the Greens and slipped to fourth place.

She secured her best results in the northern Black Forest and in the region around Heilbronn, the worst in Stuttgart, Freiburg and Heidelberg.

The results of the

free voters

in Baden-Württemberg vary greatly between the individual constituencies.

In Aalen they got the fourth most votes with 9.7 percent.

They were also able to secure more than five percent in the constituencies of Main-Tauber and Calw.

In contrast to the election in Rhineland-Palatinate, however, they clearly missed their entry into parliament.
