Prince Philip is dead. The news from London causes deep sadness - also in Bavaria.
One city ordered mourning flags in honor of the Queen's husband.
Coburg / Munich - people all over the world mourn.
Prince Philip is dead. The Queen's husband died "peacefully in Windsor Castle" on April 9, 2021 at the age of 99.
This was announced by Buckingham Palace.
In March the prince had been hospitalized for a month and had a heart operation.
He would have celebrated his 100th birthday in June.
In addition to numerous royal fans, high-ranking politicians also expressed their condolences - including Angela Merkel, Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Heiko Maas in Germany.
Expressions of mourning also came from the royals from the Netherlands and Belgium.
Prince Philip is dead: the city in Bavaria puts flags at half mast
And like Buckingham Palace in London, the Bavarian city of Coburg has set its flags at half mast.
Mayor Dominik Sauerteig ordered the mourning flag in honor of the husband of the British Queen Elizabeth II, as the Bavarian city announced on Friday.
"City and urban society have been closely linked to the House of Windsor for over 200 years through the ducal family," emphasized the SPD politician.
"My condolences go out to the bereaved."
As the hometown of Prince Albert, the great-great-grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II, Coburg feels connected to the British royal family.
The offspring of the ducal house of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha married his cousin, the British Queen Victoria, in 1840.
The British royal family hardly cultivated the ties to Germany because of the temporary proximity of the Coburg ducal house to the National Socialists.
