District - When the inns and pubs had to close in November 2020, this also affected the brewers - especially the keg business, which came to a standstill. The opening of outdoor catering is now boosting sales again. The Starnberg brewery, which is currently (in the last few moves) relocating its production from Höhenrain to Wieling, is in good spirits anyway. After all, the company recently set a sales record. And Martin Glaab, spokesman for the Andechs monastery brewery, says: “It's a good sign. We're happy, we're bottling again. ”However, one or the other corona-related uncertainty is still preoccupying the brewers.
After all: some fears do not come true or not completely - not even in the pandemic.
On May 9, 2020, about a year ago, the Starnberg-based Merkur quoted Glaab as follows: “With the stable bottle business, we can only compensate for the declines in the other areas to a small extent.” Today Glaab says: “With the bottle business we are we satisfied.
We were able to almost completely compensate for the losses. ”And then there are now“ courageous restaurateurs ”who are also taking down barrels for their beer gardens.
According to the Andechser spokesman, their ordering behavior is still "rather cautious".
Andechs monastery brewery: "Still unsafe terrain"
The monastery brewery is taking a risk again, Glaab emphasizes. "If the developments repeat themselves, which we don't hope, the restaurateurs give back beer - or we can't deliver it." They are moving on "still unsafe territory". Nevertheless, there is another good news from the Holy Mountain: The export business abroad, which had suffered badly due to Corona, has been picking up again for a long time. In some places in the USA, Austria, Russia or Finland, Andechs beer has a certain cult status, says Glaab.
The expansion of the Starnberg brewery (active since 2016) does not go that far - but at least on a few ski huts in Austria. “And now the first truck has left for Italy,” says managing director Florian Schuh. For a few weeks now, people in the region have noticed: “Orders are going up again.” For example, at golf clubs whose members drink Starnbergers. And gastronomy is also picking up again, says Schuh. In line with this, the brewery posted on Facebook a week ago: “The first 8,000 liters of Starnberger Hell are produced in our new brewery.” Because production in Höhenrain had become too small for the requirements and ambitions, the company looked for a larger plot of land in the Feldafing district Wieling. Even if the brewing is already in progress, the final construction work is still in progress.

Apparently, word got around that it could have contributed to the latest record: “In the first four months of this year, we had an increase in sales of 22 percent compared to the previous year.
More than ever before, ”says Schuh.
“It went really well in retail recently.” He considers the catering area separately.
And these customers are now asking for beer again - "from five-star hotels to little Italians on the corner".
But even at the Starnberg brewery there is still a bitter aftertaste for the time being. Larger celebrations - another mainstay - are not yet in sight. “That hurts us,” says the managing director. “At the Bachhausen fraternity's May Day celebrations, we served 10,000 liters in one day.” The proof of the line of business can already be seen in the new facility in Wieling. 5000 beer mugs are stored there.
