Eden Ben Zaken is in a new phase of her career.
Still, with all due respect to the "Queen of Roses" stage that made her what she is today (i.e. the biggest female name in oriental music since Sarit Hadad), six years have passed since then.
The world of Mediterranean singing is not in the same place either, and with the years, the changes and the fashion - it has naturally merged with the world of clubs and dance floors.
Hence Ben Zaken's decision to direct her musical style to places like "Ana Magnona", and of course "Moabat" which broke the country in the past year, are in fact a correct understanding of the field and the music industry in 2021.
As one who is well acquainted with the rules of the game, the singer is now releasing "Candy," a new song from those musical venues that made "Moabat" a hit.
Here too the atmosphere is clubbing and rather dark.
Here, too, it is a dialogue between a boy and a girl, which can be described as a passive-aggressive romance.
Attempting courtship in the wee hours of the night (and the emptiness of the club), between a man offering lines like "Listen flower, do you want some with me?"
And "Tell me, angel, isn 't it a pity?", And a woman answering sentences like "You look a little unreal to me" and "Listen to me well, you are unbearable", but later concludes in a line "Maybe it's a little simpler, that's what I want to. "
Is this a hit that will do what "Moabat" did - which also added a word to Israeli mainstream jargon?
Apparently not, mainly because "candy" feels a bit formulaic.
The song was written by Ben Zaken herself together with Avi Ohayon, one of the most sought-after lyricists in the genre, and was produced by Matan Dror, who works with all the big names in the same industry, led by Eyal Golan and Omer Adam.
So yes, on the face of it, it seems that Abaz has used all the right ingredients in making its new candy. But what to do that sometimes, even when following the recipe instructions, the result comes out a little dry.
