Marktoberdorf / Hamburg - What is the wish-wagon of the Arbeiter Samariter Bund (ASB) doing in front of the Gulielminetti House?

Many an early riser asked themselves this question on a Tuesday morning in Marktoberdorf.

“To be in the Port of Hamburg again, that would be great!” The team at the BRK Gulielminetti senior citizens' home and nursing home heard this wistful sentence again and again from one of their residents.

The now 81-year-old senior had been a cook on a cargo ship for a South American shipping company for 15 years.

On his journeys through the world's oceans, he often set sail from Hamburg.

A harbor tour and a crab roll

Thanks to the wish-wagon of the Arbeiter Samariter Bund, Regionalverband Allgäu eV, the heartfelt wish of the former "Smutje" could be realized within a few weeks. Three qualified volunteer wish-fulfillers set off with the wish-wagon and a touched passenger in the direction of Hamburg. "Housed in the 'Lupine' retirement home in Hamburg, the former sailor experienced a harbor tour on his special three-day 'vacation', a visit to a shipping company and was finally able to bite into the long-awaited crab bun," said Sonja Hujo, coordinator of the wish-list at ASB Allgäu. Everything was planned and implemented in detail by her team.

The idea was born in the Gulielminetti's occupational therapy team, then the resident's relatives were involved, external therapists spoke of “a good thing”, the family doctor gave his declaration of no objection and the formal effort was also thanks to the help of the coordination team of the ASB wish-wagon done quickly.

"We would like to thank the volunteers from the ASB from the bottom of our hearts and wish them continued energy and perseverance for this wonderful work," said Gabi Friedrich, head of occupational therapy in the Gulileminetti House, when saying goodbye.

Fulfilling a special wish in the last phase of life for seriously ill people - that is the task of the nationwide touring ASB wish-wagon.
