Adv. Anat Masad-Canaan was elected to the position of Public Defender | Israel Today

The committee, headed by Minister Gideon Saar, was impressed by its skills. The Public Defender's Committee today (Sunday) selected Adv. Anat Masad-Canaan for the position of National Public Defender's. This was after interviews with the final candidates who were invited to appear before the committee.  Adv. Anat Misad-Canaan has served as the Public Defender's Officer in the Haifa District and has been a member of the senior staff of the Public Defender's Office since 2


The Public Defender's Committee today (Sunday) selected Adv. Anat Masad-Canaan for the position of National Public Defender's. This was after interviews with the final candidates who were invited to appear before the committee. 

Adv. Anat Misad-Canaan has served as the Public Defender's Officer in the Haifa District and has been a member of the senior staff of the Public Defender's Office since 2014. She holds a bachelor's degree in law from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a master's degree in law from the University of Haifa. 

After an internship at the Supreme Court, Masad-Canaan worked as an attorney in the Haifa District Attorney's Office (criminal) for about two years.

She later worked as a defense attorney in the private market and ran a law firm in Haifa, until she joined the public defense.

During her work in the Public Defender's Office, she established the National Forum for Forensic Evidence and served as a member of the Public Committee for the Prevention of False Convictions.

The committee's chairman, Justice Minister Gideon Saar, said that "the Public Defender's Office has an important role to play in safeguarding the rights of suspects and defendants in criminal proceedings.

In her professional path, Adv. Masad-Canaan went through various professional stations - in the State Attorney's Office, as a private defense attorney and in the public defense.

"The committee was impressed by its skills and qualities that give it the ability to lead the public defender to face the challenges it faces. The committee also expressed great appreciation to Dr. Hagit Larnau, who has served in recent months as national defense attorney, for her skills, experience and contribution," the minister said.

"I thank the Minister of Justice and the Defense Committee for the choice," said Adv. Anat Masad-Canaan.

In addition to Justice Minister Gideon Saar, the former Supreme Court President's subcommittee, Judge (retired) Eliakim Rubinstein, Prof. Ruth Kanai, Adv. Uri Keinan and Adv. Noyet Negev.
