Streaming services were just the beginning.

The death of the cinema is not a new phenomenon.

However, Corona could accelerate it.

Now a cinema gem in the south of Munich is also in danger.

Munich - people laughed, cried and snogged here. Tens of thousands of films have been shown on the two screens since 1995. Now the Solln * cinema is threatened with extinction. "We were surprised to learn that our landlord had submitted an application to the local building commission to change the use," says Cornelia Green from the operating company Omaha Film GmbH, "namely the conversion of the cinema into several apartments and a shop."

According to the responsible district committee, the building application for Sollner Str. 43a was probably received by the local building commission at the end of August.

The BA regrets the requested change of use, but sees "unfortunately no possibilities under building law to reject the application".

Does this seal the end of the cinema, which received the city's cinema program award in 2010 for “the inspired program work with its carefully considered neighborhood reference”?

Kino Solln before the end: Türkendolch, Tivoli and Gabriel have already had to close

The Türkendolch, the Tivoli Theater and the Gabriel have already had to close, as have the Münchner Freiheit cinemas. The cinema fans in the south of Munich * do not want to believe that their house should also join the list of dying film houses. “I watched James Bond here on Sunday,” says Jürgen Jacob (59), who lives just 200 meters away. “The cinema is actually always well attended. It enriches the whole area. That would be a shame. ”In fact, the pandemic hit this cinema hard too. “Of course, Corona tore a hole in our cash register, too,” says Green. That is why the operator is trying to reach an agreement with the landlord "to adjust the rent," says Cornelia Green of our newspaper. Not an easy starting position. But: "We are still hopeful, that we will succeed. This cinema is the last one in the south of Munich and our hearts are attached to it. An end would be very sad for us and the whole catchment area. "

In its resolution, the district committee calls on the applicant to “sit down with the cinema operators and discuss whether there can still be an economically profitable continuation of the traditional cinema operation for both sides”.

A realization period is not specified in the building application, says Alexander Aichwalder, chairman of the building sub-committee.

“In the best case, one could hope that the owner wants to secure the building rights“ in reserve ”.

When asked by the owner of the building, the Sedlmayr Immobilien Group, there was no response at the time of going to press.
