By putting on pause their trade dispute over steel and aluminum, the United States and the European Union are ushering in a

"new era",

hailed US President Joe Biden and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Smiles and signs of complicity dominated their joint appearance before the press in Rome.

insists Ursula von der Leyen, recalling the difficulty in filling the cracks opened by Donald Trump in the transatlantic relationship.

Because this saga dates back to June 2018, when the Trump Administration used the national security argument to impose additional tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum on a number of countries, including Turkey, China, Canada and members of the European Union.
