Do we need a new Prime Minister's Conference? Chancellor Braun says yes, several SPD-led countries say no. Braun is now accusing the SPD candidate for Chancellor Scholz of refusal.

Most recently, there was a Prime Minister's Conference in mid-October - for the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic, even in attendance and not just digitally as in the previous rounds.

The number of new corona infections is now increasing rapidly, and the intensive care beds in Germany are filling up again.

But a date for a new round of country bosses is still pending.

Chancellor Helge Braun (CDU) sees this as a failure of SPD chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz - and accused him of irresponsibility in the Corona policy.

Braun blamed Scholz in the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” for the fact that the SPD in the federal and state governments refused to participate in a new round of countries with Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) despite the corona situation that had come to a head again.

Government spokesman Steffen Seibert confirmed on Friday in Berlin that the current federal government is ready for such a federal-state meeting.

Braun now said with regard to Scholz: "The fact that he is currently refusing a federal-state meeting out of consideration for his traffic light negotiations despite the high levels of the corona numbers, I find that irresponsible for a future chancellor, for example."

Scholz is not formally responsible for convening such a meeting.

However, the SPD Prime Minister had made it clear that they did not consider a joint conference to be necessary at the moment.

Braun obviously also attributes this to Scholz.

"All of the countries have telephones"

Most recently, Greens chief Robert Habeck was skeptical about a new conference of prime ministers.

"The Prime Minister's Conference is a coordination body, not a decision-making body, and that has not really worked out well in the past," he told RTL and ntv.

If the country bosses wanted to exchange ideas, that would also be possible without a conference, because »everyone in the countries has telephones«.

At their last round, the countries insisted on uniform rules - but are far from that.
