German missing in Rocky Mountains: Bone discovery brings clarification

The place of discovery: at an altitude of about 3350 meters in the Rocky Mountain National Park.

This is announced by the administration of the park in the US state of Colorado.

The man from West Germany was last seen on February 13, 1983, near the national park.

There he went on a ski trip lasting several days.

Since then there has been no sign of life from the winter sports enthusiast.

A week later, the 27-year-old was reported missing by his roommate.

As the national park explains, there was heavy snowfall at the time.

This hindered the search work massively.

The helpers were only able to find a snow cave with a sleeping bag and the man's belongings.

Further searches were unsuccessful.

Rocky Mountains: Ski hiker missing - case for national park closed

A hiker came across the remains last year.

He reported the find to the park administration.

However, because of the ongoing fires, his evidence could not be verified immediately.

Afterwards, thick snow covered the site.

The bones could therefore only be recovered this summer.

Attempts to unequivocally clarify the identity of the deceased - for example via a tooth comparison - were unsuccessful.

Nevertheless, the park administration is convinced that it is the missing German.

By recovering the remains, the missing person case, which has been open for almost four decades, will be closed, she said.
