The UN Security Council on Friday expressed "
deep concern
" at the escalation of the conflict in Ethiopia and called for a ceasefire.
The members of this body "
call for an end to hostilities and to negotiate a lasting ceasefire,
" they said in a joint statement read to the press by the Mexican ambassador to the United Nations Juan Ramon.
They also demand “
the creation of conditions to launch an inclusive Ethiopian national dialogue to resolve the crisis
”.

A public council meeting, scheduled for Friday, has been postponed to Monday.
But the fifteen member countries, which have so far struggled to agree on a common position, issued this declaration when, after a year of war, the Tigrayan rebels threatened to march on Addis Ababa.

They notably "
expressed their deep concern about the extension and intensification of military clashes in northern Ethiopia
", as well as "
repercussions of the conflict on the humanitarian situation
" and "
the stability of the country and from the whole region
”.
The Security Council also reaffirmed its support for “
Ethiopia's territorial integrity and unity
”.
