Opinion | Locate future teachers already among students Israel today

2021-11-13T22:02:40.127Z

The main problem of the education system is both the shortage of teachers and their quality • So why not create a teacher track that will start already in schools? • This is how it can work

Only about half of the teachers who join the general education system are graduates in teaching, according to CBS data published two years ago. While the education system suffers from a critical shortage of talented teachers, the Ministry of Education has to compromise on more favorable conditions Adopts the best that the education system grows and directs them to quality tracks, some of which are long-term.

In practice, the IDF uses the Compulsory Recruitment Law and annually picks the highest quality fruits of the education system.

Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Education - one manages to raise and preserve some of the best and highest quality human capital each year, and the other serves as its mirror image.

Can the Ministry of Education not act like the IDF? True, the Ministry of Education does not have a compulsory recruitment law in the field of education, although it may be worth examining. But is a country that likes to flaunt its creative thinking unable to think otherwise?

The education system, which so needs quality human capital, is the fruitful tree that the IDF enjoys. Is it not possible to produce a process in which the fruitful tree will enjoy its quality fruit? In my view, everything is in the hands of the Ministry of Education. All she has left is to find the good ones and the right ones, and come up with a plan that will keep them in the system.

Every year, the education system requires about 12,000 new teachers, but the low starting salary does not attract high-quality candidates. This creates a situation where the system is forced to lower the entry threshold. When the system also can not filter candidates because it needs everyone, and also does not emit the least good, the result is one: the quality goes down.

If we examine similar models to the teaching profession, we will find youth in instructional and educational roles in both youth movements and the military. In both places we see that they serve as a role model and are in fact engaged in the education of young people from them - and with great success, in most cases. It is clear that a plan to increase the quality of teachers based on locating the "best for education" during the upper division requires planning over the years, and must be done in coordination and cooperation with youth movements, the IDF, the Preparatory Council, and of course the Ministry of Education. For influential positions in the Israeli education system, the track can look like this: locating and filtering the best students for teaching; an abbreviated track for matriculation that includes a teaching certificate (11 years of schooling); years 12 and 13 - teaching in schools; Bachelor's degree elective, alongside teaching in school; loan to civil industry (refresher); return to management position.

The OECD's annual report found that in terms of quantity, Israeli students are given much more study time. However, in international studies examining literacy in the fields of mother tongue, mathematics and science, Israel lags behind. If we fail to bring good students to Israel Enough, we should not add more hours and days of learning to them, but focus on attracting quality personnel to the education system, preserving and developing it.
