Towards the end of Mandelblit's term in February: Discussion of the working procedures of the committee • Among the names that emerged as possible replacements: Attorney who was part of the Netanyahu case team

The committee to select the attorney general will convene today and will mainly deal with its working arrangements for the election of the next attorney general, after Avichai Mandelblit is expected to retire in February.

In recent days, the name of Adv. Uri Keinan, who served as the acting chairman of the Bar Association, has come up.

Keenan was also mentioned as a potential candidate for the position of judge in the Supreme Court, in the slot of a senior lawyer from the private sector.

Other names that came up are Oshra Gaz - Tel Aviv District Attorney;

Professor Ariel Bendor - expert in constitutional, administrative and criminal law who was dean of the universities of Haifa and Bar-Ilan;

Yonatan Tadmor - Acting Attorney for Taxation and Economics, who was part of the Netanyahu portfolio;

And Uzi Salman - the legal advisor of the Tel Aviv Municipality.

In addition, it was reported that an appeal was also made to Adv. Noyet Negev, who represents Arnon (Noni) Mozes, the controlling shareholder in the Yedioth Ahronoth group.

The Government Advisory Committee for the Election of the Attorney General consists of five members.

The committee will be chaired by retired judge Asher Grunis, a former Supreme Court president after whom the committee will also be named.

Grunis was appointed by Supreme Court President Justice Esther Hayut and with the consent of Justice Minister Gideon Saar, former Justice Minister Dan Meridor as a government representative, MK Zvi Hauser as a Knesset representative, Adv. Tami Ullman as a representative of the Bar Association and Prof. Ron Shapira as a representative of the Academy.

Prior to Meridor's appointment, there was an intention to appoint former Justice Minister Meir Sheetrit as a government representative, but following an affair in which a silence fee had to be paid to a domestic worker who claimed he sexually harassed her, this created a public outcry and Sheetrit was forced to give up the appointment.

The Attorney General of Israel is one of the most important legal figures in the country.

He serves both as the Attorney General and as the head of the prosecution, and his power is immense and numerous.

The procedure for his appointment is done by the executive authority, beginning with the locating committee and ending with the approval of the government, but once authorized for the position - the government can no longer interfere in its decisions.

An exception is the replacement of Spokesman Yitzhak Zamir in the Line 300 case, but it seems that today such a decision could not have passed, and if it had passed - the High Court would not have approved it.

Another issue that is pending these days concerns the question of splitting the powers of the next attorney general - between the attorney general and the head of the prosecution, in a law that the current Minister of Justice, Gideon Saar, intends to pass.
