Opinion | The weapons problem in the sector requires root canal treatment Israel today

2021-12-16T22:10:34.833Z

After many years of neglect, we are at a critical breaking point in relation to coexistence in the city of Lod. • The firearms in the hands of the Arab population pose a danger to all residents.

Residents of the State of Israel are witnessing the phenomenon of illegal possession of weapons and injury to persons crossing sectors.

All the sages in the government are trying in every way to combat the phenomenon, but without significant success.

The reason: they do not address the root of the problem, they just go round and round.

More than 20 years ago, when I was deputy mayor of Lod, the then police commissioner, the late Yehuda Wilk, came to the municipality for a discussion on the question: how and how to fight illegal weapons in the city?

All the efforts of the security forces to eradicate the phenomenon were to no avail.

I remember making an unusual but practical proposal at the time - to close the city for two weeks, and at the same time, bring a paratroop brigade into the city with sophisticated equipment for detecting weapons, and thus take out trucks of illegal weapons caches.

Unfortunately, they did not take my advice and left the situation as it was.

Today, after many years of neglect, we are at a critical breaking point in relation to coexistence in the city of Lod, with Arab residents possessing firearms and not hesitating to use it frequently.

This is without a doubt an unbearable situation for all the residents of the city, who just want to live peacefully side by side.

Even at the cost of raising a shout

It must be said clearly: the Israeli police and the commissioner are doing a lot for the security of the civilians, but without root canal treatment - nothing will help and the problem will not be solved. Active to eradicate this difficult phenomenon - even at the cost of raising an outcry - while appealing to the relevant Knesset committees that will oversee this important matter, on which many lives depend.

And to you, Amar Bar-Lev, Minister of Internal Security: I would suggest that you adopt a little modesty.

You will learn from your late father, the late Haim Bar-Lev, who was a friend of mine. Your father was chief of staff and minister of police, but he was mostly a humble man, a man of deeds and not of words.

Start doing and not talking, so that we do not reach the point of no return that will cost us dearly.

Were we wrong?

Fixed!
