Opinion | Academic equality begins with proper preparation Israel today

Arab youth must be persuaded to enter a year of academic preparation, which will bring them to the first academic year much more mentally, educationally, socially and professionally prepared

Many Arab students in Israeli academia often encounter difficulties resulting from poor pedagogical preparation during the school's 12 years of schooling, or from a continuous lack of active intention on the part of parents, some of whom experience socio-economic difficulties.

The vast majority of Arab students tend to get lost during the year after graduating from school, and those who still manage to become full-fledged students discover the real world they have to deal with, which includes socio-economic difficulties and lips.

Against the background of these difficulties, which greatly increase the dropout rates of the Arab student in his first academic year, efforts are being made to find the ideal model that will prepare the Arab candidate for academic studies. At Tel Aviv University, for example, we previously piloted a three-month course that includes psychometric studies, Hebrew, English, an online course and various lectures to prepare the Arab candidate. But this plan could not cope with the many difficulties and was therefore shelved. At the same time, there are programs of the University for Youth, to which outstanding school students from Arab society enroll, but this is where the cherries in the whipped cream come from in the first place, so it is not an answer for most Arab students.

Also, there are many other online programs, but all of them do not have maximum preparation that will reflect the full range of difficulties.

Arab youth must be persuaded to enter a year of academic preparation that will bring them to the first academic year when they are much more mentally, educationally, socially and professionally prepared.

Such a year should include professional and social components, which will greatly improve self-confidence and greatly reduce the chances of dropping out.

During this transition year, the candidate will go through many workshops to improve self-expression;

Will teach psychometric courses tailored to the lip and professional aspects;

Will strengthen his knowledge of Hebrew and English, required for success in academia and employment;

Will listen to expert lectures that present to him the ways to deal with the many challenges;

Will receive guidance in choosing the relevant profession;

Will learn how to combine studies and part-time work for a living;

And will develop self-discipline for successful self-learning.

Such a transition year should also include the volunteer activity of the candidates within the society in which they live, to strengthen the connection and commitment of the candidate to the place in which he lives.

To my delight, it has recently been decided to launch such a pilot program in collaboration with the Yad Hanadiv Group and two leading academic institutions: Tel Aviv University and the Hebrew University.

In the first stage, this program will reach outstanding students from the twelfth grade from various Arab and mixed cities. In order to be successful, such a program must receive the blessing of all educational and social factors, and be recognized by academic institutions and the Council for Higher Education. Which will also be reflected in the increase in enrollment for graduate degrees - something that is a challenge that many relevant factors work on.
