The Lyon public prosecutor's office appealed Thursday, January 6 in the trial of ten people accused of violently assaulting a Lyon police officer in June 2020, which ended Tuesday with the release of eight of the defendants.

At the end of the hearing on November 5, 2021, two men aged 19 and 20 were sentenced Tuesday to five years 'imprisonment, including thirty months' suspended probation, for violence aggravated by three circumstances. : in assembly, with weapon and on depositary of the public authority.

This sentence corresponded to the requisitions of the public prosecution, but the prosecution is appealing because the required committal warrant has not been issued by the criminal court. The prosecution is also appealing against six of the eight defendants who had been released for lack of sufficient information to establish their participation in the facts, according to the court. At the hearing, the public prosecutor had required for these defendants two and a half years in prison, considering that they had participated in a "
single scene of violence
".
The facts occurred on June 14, 2020 around 4:00 a.m., when the police officer, off duty and in civilian clothes, was returning from an evening with his companion.
As he was about to cross the street, a car passed him and made a U-turn.
The driver got off calling him a "
dirty cop
," according to his story.
During this first altercation, the police struck.
A few minutes later, a group of ten people rushed at him as he reached the door of his building.
His companion had just enough time to take shelter.

At the time stationed at the Caluire-et-Cuire police station, a town bordering Lyon, the official was punched and kicked, as well as with a metal bar.

At the hearing, the defendants, identified by video surveillance and telephony, acknowledged their presence on the scene, but denied having committed the violence and assured that they were unaware of the victim's status as a police officer.
Two minors suspected of having provoked the first altercation and of having rounded up the group are sent to the juvenile court.
The hearing was postponed Thursday to March 4.
