Long-distance rail traffic was partly interrupted on Saturday evening in several northern and eastern regions, notably between Hamburg, Berlin and Bremen and remained disrupted on Sunday due in particular to the fall of trees or branches on the tracks.

Meteorological services warned on Sunday that strong winds were still expected in these regions as well as in southern Germany.

In Beelitz, near Berlin, a 58-year-old man was killed on Saturday evening by the fall of an electoral panel blown away by the wind while he was walking with his partner, according to local media citing the police.

In Bremen, a tree fell on a passerby, seriously injuring him, according to firefighters.

In the Mecklenburg-Pomerania region (north-east), the driver of a motorcycle was seriously injured when he hit a fallen tree on the road.

A total of ten vehicles collided with fallen branches or overturned trees in the Neubrandenburg region (east), police said on Sunday.

Many parked cars were also damaged by falling trees.

In Berlin, firefighters have asked the population to stay indoors as strong winds have been blowing since Saturday evening in the capital.

Hamburg was also hit by these bad weather and the famous fish market on the quays of the Elbe was flooded.
