Mexican President Andrés Manuel Lapez Obrador assured journalists in the country on Thursday that they were

"not alone"

Around 150 journalists have been murdered in the country since 2000, according to the organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF), which points out that 92% of crimes against journalists remain unpunished in the country.

Among them, 29 have been since the beginning of the mandate of the left-wing president, in power since 2018. The assassinations of Lourdes Maldonado, on January 23 in Tijuana, and that of Heber Lopez in Oaxaca on February 10, have led journalists from all over the country to take to the streets on Monday to demonstrate.

"Here, from Tijuana, where we buried two of our colleagues, Margarito Martinez and Lourdes Maldonado, in less than a week, we will not stop demanding justice

," said journalist Sonia de Anda.

The head of state, who has already promised

"zero impunity"

for the murderers of journalists, called for

"confidence"

in the ongoing investigations.

"We are going to do it right, not only because it is our responsibility, but also because it is our belief

," he said.

The Mexican president had been singled out by human rights organizations, such as the Committee to Protect Journalists and Human Rights Watch, for having publicly denigrated journalistic criticism.
