In Bukovina, this region which stretches between Ukraine in the north and Romania in the south, more than 10,000 Ukrainians, including some holders of Romanian passports, had been ready for several weeks to flee the war in their country.
They were the first to cross the border, just hours after the outbreak of hostilities.
Entire families arrived, before the ban on leaving Ukraine for able-bodied men, aged 18 to 60, was declared the next day.
From now on, at the Porubnoe-Siret border post, the main crossing point for Ukrainians who have chosen Romania, only women with children pass on foot, suitcases in hand, often pushing a stroller, sometimes accompanied by a pet.
We rarely meet elderly people.
Many are the newcomers to come from the main cities of central western Ukraine, or from Kiev, some 600 km away…
