There are only a few trains left in Lviv - too few for all the people who want to flee the war.

Day five of the Russian attack on Ukraine: There is fighting in many places in the country, and some residential areas are apparently also being shelled by the Russian armed forces.

Delegations from Ukraine and Russia met for the first time for talks on the border with Belarus.

In the morning, President Zelenskyi addressed the Russian soldiers again in Russian:

Volodomyr Zelenskyi, President

»Put down your arms and go.

Don't believe your commanders, don't believe the propagandists.

Just save your lives.

Goes!"

Air alert in Kyiv.

The capital is still under Ukrainian control, but the situation is tense.

There are said to be Russian saboteurs and mercenaries in the city.

Nevertheless, many people dare to go outside for a moment and stock up on the essentials.

Alexandra Roshevskaya lives in the center.

She was stuck in her apartment with her dog for two days.

Alexandra Roshevskaya, resident

»We heard the bombs.

My parents live in another part of the city, we are always on the phone.

It's bad for me not to be with them."

Many Kievans have sought shelter in one of the underground metro stations in the past few days.

Alla Sirejak, resident

»I was in the metro station for two days.

People try to help each other by eating or charging their phones.

(...) Now I feel good because I can finally see the sun again.«

A little ray of hope in the war.

The state of emergency for the young patients of the largest children's hospital in Ukraine is particularly bad.

Medical staff, parents and children have set themselves up as best they can in the basement of the clinic.

The number of patients was reduced from 600 to 200,

Pavlo Plavskyy, Neurosurgeon

»We have many patients that we cannot transfer to other hospitals.

That's very difficult."

Immunocompromised children or children with cancer, for example, or children who need to be supplied with oxygen.

Maryna, mother of a child with cancer

»We have the medicines we need.

But food is getting scarce.

Local aid organizations have promised to take care of us.

We are now waiting for them to bring us bread and juice for the children.”

The hospital has stored medicines for a month.

In the past few days, the first children who were wounded in the fighting have been hospitalized.

The worst could be yet to come for Kyiv and all of Ukraine.

Because Russia has so far remained on a war course.

It is unlikely that the negotiations on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border will change that.

According to media reports, Ukraine is demanding the withdrawal of all Russian troops, including from the separatist areas in Donbass.

Russian President Putin on Monday called for the demilitarization of Ukraine and recognition of the Crimean Peninsula annexed by Russia as conditions for an end to the Russian invasion.

The negotiations ended without result on Monday and are to be continued in the coming days.

Volodomyr Zelenskyi, President of Ukraine

»We call on the European Union to admit Ukraine with a special procedure.

We are grateful to our partners for supporting us.

But our goal is to be with all Europeans and, most importantly, on an equal footing.

I am sure this is fair.

I'm sure we deserve it.

I am sure that this is possible.«

That is conceivable as a perspective, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell replied, but:

Josep Borrell, EU foreign policy chief

“That's not on today's agenda.

Believe me, we have very practical things to do.

Accession to the EU takes many years.

We must now take care of the coming hours.«

Dutch soldiers load rocket-propelled grenades and Stinger missiles into a transport plane – the weekend footage was released on Monday.

Germany also wants to supply Ukraine with such weapons.

Public support for the attacked country is growing: instead of a Shrove Monday procession, there were protests against the war in Cologne.
