A powerful 6.7 magnitude earthquake hit the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Monday, the United States Seismological Institute (USGS) announced.

The quake struck at 4:09 a.m. (9:09 p.m. GMT Sunday, 10:09 p.m. France) at a depth of 21 kilometers, and its epicenter was 167 kilometers west of the coastal town of Pariaman, the USGS said.
