An earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale rocked the Indonesian island of Sumatra, but there were no reports of injuries or material damage.
Reuters quoted the US Geological Survey as saying in a statement that the quake occurred at a depth of 21 km, while its epicenter was located 167 km west of the coastal city of Pariaman.
The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center said earlier today that an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale occurred at a depth of 40 km near Kipulawan Batu in Indonesia, without giving further details.
Indonesia is often subject to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis because of its location on the Ring of Fire. A devastating earthquake in the Indian Ocean and the accompanying tsunami in 2004 killed nearly 230,000 people in more than ten countries, with most of the casualties in Indonesia.
