Angoulême 2022: an elitist prize list which crowns beautiful and demanding works

2022-03-19T20:02:45.997Z

The 49th edition of the comic book festival has unveiled its winners. A wine that is still as sharp as ever, which unfortunately no longer really reflects the eclecticism of a popular genre.

After two special years, linked to the pandemic, here are the Fauves d'Angoulême, these comic book prizes which roar while turning the heads of authors, publishers and all comic book enthusiasts.

At the start of the festival, after the surprise election of the Grand Prix de la ville to Julie Doucet, some specialists had begun to predict that the prizes this year were going to reward works far removed from popular comics.

Admittedly, they were right.

Nevertheless, within the theater of Angoulême, the electric atmosphere was at its height.

The prize list, still as sharp as ever, crowns beautiful and demanding works, but which this time quite frankly underlines the divide between the great successes of popular comics, and the more sectarian vision of a comic strip that is sometimes a little too affected.

The Fauve d'or for the best comic of the year 2022 therefore goes to

Listening to pretty Márcia

, by Brazilian cartoonist Marcello Quintanilha, published by Éditions Çà et là.

Indisputably, the album by Brazilian Marcello Quintanilha (Fauve Polar SNCF 2016, for

Tungstène

), far from the classic Franco-Belgian comic strip, deserves some attention.

An original graphic novel, unearthed by the talented Serge Ewenczyk,

Listening to Pretty Márcia

features a nurse with a big heart who lives in a favela in Rio.

Marcia shares her daily life with her longtime companion Aluisio and her only daughter Jacqueline, whom she had with another man.

Alas, the frivolous Jacqueline has strayed into bad associations in the heart of the city's gangs.

Her mother will have to try everything to get her out of this mess...

A well-executed Brazilian thriller, this surprisingly colorful social chronicle is above all an opportunity to discover another culture and life in the favela.

of the living

Another award-winning album,

Des vivants

, concocted by the trio Raphaël Meltz, Louise Moaty and Simon Roussin, brilliantly unearths a somewhat forgotten story, that of one of the first movements of the Resistance, known as the Réseau du Musée de l 'Man.

In the summer of 1940, when France was occupied, a few early rebels who refused fate laid the foundations of the Resistance, prisoner escapes, passages to England in the free zone, not forgetting the publication of a clandestine newspaper...

Superbly illustrated by Simon Roussin, whose pastel tones mitigate the darkness and harshness of the subject, this masterful album therefore receives the Special Jury Prize, after having also been awarded the Goscinny Prize for Best Screenplay.

Spirou, hope despite everything

To stay at the heart of this dark period, it is worth highlighting the Fauve of the series, which crowns the fascinating and long-term work of Emile Bravo.

With this third volume,

Spirou, hope despite everything,

the author of

Journal d'un ingénue

continues his recovery of popular heroes Spirou and Fantasio, and tells us about the Second World War, the occupation of Belgium and resistance.

Bravo tackles serious subjects with humor and delicacy, such as deportation, resistance or the impact of this terrible and violent period on children... Its retro graphics suit this elegant album perfectly.

the author of

Diary of an ingenuous

continues his recovery of these two popular heroes that are Spirou and Fantasio.

Mégantic, a train in the night

It would be bad grace to forget the first Eco Fauve Raja, which will have caused controversy, but which rewards a quality Quebec work,

Mégantic, un train dans la nuit

, by Anne-Marie Saint-Cerny and Christian Quesnel, recently reviewed in The comic box...

If they crown interesting, innovative, rare or experimental works, the Angoulême 2022 prize list remains deliberately confined to the square of selective, intellectual comics committed to a certain elitism.

There is no manga or general public bestsellers there... Too bad.
