"History has repeatedly proven that sanctions cannot solve problems, they only harm the general public and affect the global economic and financial system," Cheng added.
The Chinese Vice Foreign Minister reiterated his country's support for Moscow's position on NATO, saying that "the alliance should not expand to the east, making a nuclear power like Russia besieged."
"NATO should have disintegrated and gone down in history along with the Warsaw Pact, but instead it has continued to strengthen and expand its forces and militarily intervened in countries such as Yugoslavia, Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan, and one can foresee the consequences of going down this path," Cheng added.
The Chinese diplomat pointed out that President Xi Jinping, in his talks with US President Joe Biden yesterday, urged the parties in Ukraine to show political will and be keen on continuing dialogue and negotiations, noting that the United States and NATO should conduct dialogue with Russia to address the essence of the Ukrainian crisis and ease concerns. security for both Russia and Ukraine.
