Outside the train station, in the cold of a pancake, smoke billows from the makeshift bonfires, located in the station parking lot, of people trying to warm up a bit.

Next to the train, in the parking lot are buses of humanitarian organizations, which offer free transportation to Poland.

At the same time, food and clothing are distributed to the refugees at the tents at the entrance to the station.

Police and soldiers, some of them masked, roam among all the tens of thousands of refugees, searching for "Russian spies."

The station continues to be a pilgrimage center for tens of thousands of refugees every day;

Those who come to it from the bombed-out cities - and those who leave it for Poland.

Outside the station we met Natasha and her two children, Alina and Dennis.

They are now on their way to Latvia.

They took a suitcase with them for everyone, but Dennis did not give up his hockey stick.

"There were explosions in Kiev and it got scary to stay there," says Natasha, "the city was under curfew and most of the time we were in a shelter, so at some point we decided to take the two children and get friends here."

Shortly before entering the station we saw Wheatley sitting with his girlfriend on the bench, just before he went out to the front to fight.

He's a little over 18, but it was clear to him that he was going out to fight to protect the house.

He spends the last minutes before leaving with the company.

At times she sheds a tear, but they both know it's the war on the house.

"The family tried to persuade me not to go out to fight because I do not have much experience, but a lot of my friends went out and they are my age. If I did not go out to fight, I would feel like I betrayed my country," he says.

Human traffic jam, exemplary silence

Upon entering the train station the staircase leading to the docks becomes a bottleneck in a line of thousands of people waiting in exemplary silence for their turn to ascend the coveted platform, which will take them across the border to places where they can live safely.

Despite the huge volume of refugees and their luggage, the ushers manage to maintain order, under the watchful eye of the police and soldiers.

Elena, who is traveling with her son, lets out a sigh of relief after she passes the check and swings her passport in a triumphant gesture.

"I'm not running away, I'm just leaving the country for a short time," she promises.

"A minute after it's all over - I'll be the first to come back here," she concludes with a smile - and gets on the train.
