Debate on speed limit: FDP rejects Greens' demand for 130 on highways

2022-04-02T13:48:50.170Z

The Greens see it as a short-term lever for savings, the FDP speaks of "partisan political ideology": In the traffic light coalition, in view of the energy crisis, a speed limit on motorways is being discussed again.

There is great concern about a large-scale energy crisis in Germany, and experts doubt the success of austerity appeals to citizens.

In view of this situation, the co-chair of the Greens, Ricarda Lang, has called for the introduction of a speed limit on motorways.

The dependence on Russian gas, oil and Russian coal has made Germany significantly vulnerable, Lang told the editorial network Germany.

"We have to do everything we can to get out of there as soon as possible."

This only works by diversifying energy sources, expanding renewable energies and, in the short term, by reducing energy consumption as quickly as possible.

The federal government should “look at everything that is on the table without prohibitions on thinking”.

Lang stressed that no measure will immediately end dependence on oil.

"And because there are otherwise hardly any measures that take effect quickly, we now need a temporary speed limit on motorways - for example for nine months and thus until the end of the year, i.e. the time by which we want to become independent of Russian oil at the latest. «

Anger in the FDP

The FDP immediately objected.

»It is remarkable how some use the war in Ukraine to implement their own symbolic themes.

In this difficult situation, the coalition has a great responsibility for the whole country," said the designated FDP Secretary General Bijan Djir-Sarai of the dpa news agency.

"Now is definitely the wrong time for party-political ideology." The FDP had already rejected a speed limit on motorways in the coalition negotiations with the SPD and the Greens.

Economics Minister Robert Habeck recently let it be known that he personally still thinks a speed limit of 130 on German autobahns makes sense.

"Personally, I was always in favor, and that has been confirmed in the last few days," Habeck said a few days ago.

Swimming pools lower the bathing temperature

While politicians are still discussing energy-saving measures, some swimming pool operators are already taking action.

The first public swimming pools are already lowering the water temperature, as the German Society for Bathing told the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" (NOZ).

Accordingly, restrictions such as canceling warm bathing days are also being discussed.

Should Russia cut its gas supplies, city baths could also be closed, it said.

According to information from the "NOZ", there are corresponding emergency plans for the first cities in North Rhine-Westphalia.

"In order to be able to maintain basic operation of the pools, measures such as the closure of outdoor pools and slides as well as 'luxury offers' will have to be considered," said DGfdB Managing Director Christian Mankel of the newspaper.

There are around 7,000 public indoor and outdoor swimming pools in Germany, most of which are heated with gas or district heating.

About 1000 pool operators are members of the umbrella organization DGfdB.
