Russia's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dmitry Polyansky, described the decision to suspend Russia's membership in the Human Rights Council as a "severe blow" to the United Nations system.
"This is a blow to the international multilateral system," Polyansky said in a statement to Rossiya 24 television, noting that "Russia cannot be excluded from the United Nations and the Security Council, otherwise this would be a catastrophic scenario."
He added, "The decision to suspend Russia's membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council will harm them. It has now become clear that our voice in the Human Rights Council will not be clear, and this does not mean that we stop our activities in the field of human rights protection and lower any standards in this regard.. But this It means that developing countries in the Human Rights Council will remain without our support.”
For his part, questioned the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev in the feasibility of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations after the decision to suspend Russia's membership in it.
Medvedev noted that Russia "has suspended its participation in the council and its powers because of this politically motivated punishment of a sovereign state that is a member of the United Nations."
