Opinion | MK Odeh, do not destroy the important building we are building | Israel Today

2022-04-12T19:41:36.663Z

The sane voice of the majority will continue to resonate, because living together here in Israel is not just a matter of fate, and both sides must want to preserve the existing and improve it for the benefit of future generations

MK Ayman Odeh and other MKs from the "common" boast that they are the emissaries of the Arab public.

Odeh's call on the Arab security forces serving in the IDF, the Border Police and the police to "throw away their weapons" does not harm those bodies or the country - which are strong enough to deal with this type of incitement - but mainly its sending public.

I wish he was dealing with the same fervor on the truly burning issues of the Arab population: violence in the villages, reducing infrastructure gaps and resource allocation, and educating the younger generation.

Those serving in the security forces will continue to serve, but the Arab public is the main casualty: the doctor or brother at the hospital in the center, the software engineer at Intel, the tour guide in Nazareth, the building contractor, the mechanic and the restaurant owner - all looking sideways and asking themselves " ? ".

And the Jewish citizen, who routinely meets those Arabs in everyday life, finds it difficult to distinguish between the unfortunate statements of their elected representatives and an entire public that strives for the common life that is woven here.

There are enough challenges and inequalities that require treatment, such as nationality law, Kaminitz, outline plans, education and sports and quality of life.

There is no need for another horror show, the purpose of which is a disgusting political game at the expense of the common citizen.

Whether in the coalition or not, MK Odeh was elected to lead decisions and not to incite and rebel.

For many years, since the end of my military service as commander of the "Sword" battalion, I have taken part in leading the "Horizons for the Future" organization, which promotes volunteering, education and culture among Druze young men and women.

Some of them were "marginal youth" and become leaders of youth groups, who instead of walking the streets go through a common process of personal empowerment, education for solidarity and active citizenship while maintaining tradition.

But then comes an elected public like Odeh, and in one moment can ruin what we have been working on for years.

I, first as an active citizen, and then as a security man - can not stand aside and give it a hand.

In this difficult time of terrorist attacks and tensions, we must consider, balance and not fight public leadership.

In the end, there is no difference when it comes to creating fear and agitation between MK Odeh and his colleague from the other side of this horror show, MK Itamar Ben Gvir.

Odeh and other leaders who do not recognize the feelings of the majority of the Arab public are the main losers from this conduct.

The sane voice of the majority will continue to resonate, the common life here in the country is not just a matter of fate, and both sides must want to preserve the existing and improve it for the benefit of future generations.

And the state and elected officials should be encouraged, not only in words but in deeds - to invest resources in the development of the villages and in the care of the residents, in informal educational programs.

Let us lead the change of reality and continue to nurture the missionary communities we have built, which are proving to be one of the keys to creating a sense of belonging and self-fulfillment of the Druze youth.

Only in this way will one or the other fail to sabotage the character of Israeli society.

Were we wrong?
