The war in Ukraine lasted seven weeks.

50 days of sights that the world has already forgotten in the decades since World War II.

And it does not seem that the end is near.

Tensions on the ground are growing - as Russia prepares for a new offensive on eastern Ukraine, the port city of Mariupol is expected to be the first to fall to Moscow.

On the other hand, experts agree that Russia's initial strategy and attempt to take over the Ukrainian capital Kyiv have failed a resounding failure.

The effects of the war are felt not only in Ukraine but throughout the world.

Commentators warn of an economic crisis that threatens to turn into a global food crisis due to significant trade disruptions, particularly in wheat exports from Ukraine.

Another major concern is the halt in gas supplies from Russia to Europe.

Putin goes on to claim that the invasion of Ukraine continues as planned.

He pledged to continue the war until Russia "achieves its goals" in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.

He also warned that negotiations between Russia and Ukraine had reached a "dead end".

At this point, it is unclear whether Russia is indeed achieving the goals set by Putin before the invasion, or changing strategy due to surprising losses on the ground - but the consensus is that this is one of the most influential events in 21st century history.

"This is perhaps the most dangerous moment in the history of the world since the Cuban Missile Crisis, when a nuclear war is suddenly an option on the table," historian Yuval Noah Harari said in an interview with CNBC yesterday (Wednesday).

"This is terrible news for the entire human race," he added.

The Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 between the United States and the Soviet Union is considered the moment when the world was closer than ever to a nuclear war.

Some experts believe that Putin's generals have a plan for a widespread offensive in eastern Ukraine, aimed at presenting tangible evidence from the battlefield to their leader until "Victory Day" on May 9, when Russia traditionally marks its 1945 victory over Nazi Germany.

If this date is indeed perceived by Putin at a time when his burden of proof is more critical than ever, then there is no doubt that time is running out for those generals.

In addition, it is impossible to know for sure that the negotiations are indeed at a dead end.

Mikhail Podolyak, a senior adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zalansky and one of the negotiators, said today that "negotiations are extremely difficult but ongoing."

Security over welfare

According to Harari, one of the global dangers of war is that countries around the world will now decide to significantly increase their defense budgets, which will be a terrible disaster for all of humanity.

"Increasing the defense budget will come at the expense of investments in health, welfare and other global crises that threaten humanity, such as the climate crisis.

Thus, a diplomatic solution of peace is not only in the interest of Ukraine and its neighbors, but of global society as a whole," Harari said. And about the world we take for granted.

"If we are not careful, we will once again sink into a jungle of wars and violence where countries will have to invest much more in tanks and missiles and less and less on teachers, nurses and welfare systems," he told CNBC.
