The flagship of the Black Sea Fleet went down during a storm on Thursday while being towed to its destination, the state agency TASS reported on Thursday evening, citing the Russian Defense Ministry.

A senior US defense official said Thursday in Washington it was not yet clear what caused the damage to the missile cruiser.
It is believed that the ship was 60 to 65 nautical miles south of the Ukrainian city of Odessa when the explosion occurred.

The cruiser is currently moving east, presumably towards Sevastopol for repairs.
