Presidential, second round: age, income, profession... who voted for Macron or Le Pen?

2022-04-24T20:09:45.861Z

Emmanuel Macron was largely re-elected President of the Republic for another five years, but certain categories of the electorate

The victory is clear and indisputable.

With 58.8% of the votes cast (according to the latest Ipsos-Sopra Steria estimate for Le Parisien, France Télévisions and Radio France), Emmanuel Macron largely won against Marine Le Pen in the second round of the presidential election. , this Sunday.

The candidate president will therefore remain five additional years at the Elysée, before leaving power, since the Constitution limits the number of consecutive terms to two.

Still, this second five-year term does not promise to be the easiest for Emmanuel Macron because certain categories of the population are far from having dubbed him.

This is what an Ipsos Sopra Steria survey for Le Parisien, France Télévisions and Radio France teaches us, carried out from Thursday to Saturday among 4,000 French people representative of the population.

Macron outperforms in the elderly

The first divide is generational.

About half of the 25-60 year olds surveyed intended to vote for Marine Le Pen, who therefore "outperformed" in these age groups.

Among those over 70, on the other hand, only 29% of respondents intended to vote in favor of Marine Le Pen, against 71% who intended to slip an Emmanuel Macron ballot into the ballot box.

The working classes opt for Le Pen…

The RN candidate stands out well ahead of her opponent among employees (57% of respondents intended to vote for her) and especially among workers (67%), while she underperforms among executives.

This split has repercussions on the vote according to diploma and level of income: respondents with a baccalaureate + 3, those whose household earns more than 3,000 euros net per month and those who say "manage to put a lot of money side” were overwhelmingly in favor of the Macron vote (respectively 74%, 65% and 75% of them intended to vote for him, against 26%, 35% and 25% for Marine Le Pen).

What the results of the first round say

… which attracts an “unsatisfied” France

The Ipsos-Sopra Steria investigators also asked respondents if they were satisfied with their life.

A France cut in two is taking shape: 79% of those who say they are “dissatisfied” and only 31% of those who are happy voted for Marine Le Pen.

The RN candidate, who focused a large part of her campaign on purchasing power, therefore succeeded in sucking up this “anger” from part of the inhabitants.

“Since 2017, we know that the Macron vote is more of a qualified vote, with heritage, and quite satisfied with his quality of life”, describes political scientist Luc Rouban.

Reports of votes favorable to Macron

With nearly 22% of the votes in the first round, Jean-Luc Mélenchon was the "third man" in this second round.

The rebellious leader had given instructions not to "give a voice" to the far right, but without calling for a vote for Emmanuel Macron.

In the internal consultation carried out by insubordinate France, a third of Melenchonist voters said they wanted to shun the ballot box this Sunday.

According to Ipsos-Sopra Steria, 17% of Jean-Luc Mélenchon's voters in the first round intended to vote for Marine Le Pen this Sunday, 42% intended to vote Macron, 27% intended to vote blank or null and 24% leaned towards abstention.

The president-candidate was full of votes among the voters of Yannick Jadot in the first round (65% of them intended to vote for him in the second round), and those of Valérie Pécresse (53%).

On the other hand, the pro-Zemmour logically went in majority towards the Le Pen vote.
