In the view of former Federal President Joachim Gauck, Germany needs a “courageous and determined federal government” in the Ukraine crisis.
"We have to clearly stand by those who were attacked," he said on Tuesday evening at the Best Brands Awards 2022 ceremony in Munich's Nobel Hotel Bayerischer Hof.
"There are culprits and victims here as clearly as seldom." It is important "that the people who live in this country do not simply give in to fear," he emphasized.
»People can do more than their fears tell them.«
It is time to recognize that “we must not only love and respect what is close to our hearts, but also defend it”.
Gauck asked: "If not now, when should this get into the heads of this nation?"
Gauck's words must be understood as clear criticism of Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
He recently justified his hesitation in supplying arms to Ukraine in SPIEGEL with concerns about a nuclear war.
In the meantime, however, there are signs of a turnaround in the issue of arms deliveries.
