Rice with mash and meat: the favorite recipe of the late Gad Shemesh | Israel Today

The late Gad Shemesh's brother says that their mother used to cook this dish from time to time and everyone loved it, but Gadi especially liked it: "The day my mother would cook it, he would just sit on the pot and really enjoy it. To this day, when I prepare the dish, I immediately remember it, and so at least I have another memory far removed from my beloved and dear brother. "

Born on the 10th of Nisan 5768 (10.4.1968) in Jerusalem.

The fourth of eight children.

Was always smiling and had a sense of humor in his youth, was the living spirit in the family, and was always at the center of events.

Three days before his 34th birthday, on March 21, 2002, Gadi was killed with Tzipi, who was then pregnant with twins, in a suicide bombing in central Jerusalem.

Both were buried in the Mount Herzl Cemetery.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups jasmine rice

  • 1 cup green mash beans

  • Half a kilo of boiled beef cut into cubes

  • 1 large chopped onion

  • 3 tablespoons oil

  • 5 cups boiling water

  • A flat spoonful of salt

  • Half a teaspoon of black pepper

  • Half a teaspoon of turmeric

  • Tablespoon of chicken soup powder

Instructions:

  • Soak the beans in water for a few hours

  • Then cook it for a quarter of an hour, rinse and strain.

  • Fry the onion in three tablespoons of oil until golden, add the rice to the pot and continue frying for another two minutes.

    Add the spices and mix everything.

  • Pour the boiling water into the mixture and stir, add the meat cubes and mix.

    Bring to a boil then lower the heat and cook for a quarter of an hour on low heat.

  • Add the cooked bean beans and mix until a uniform texture is obtained.

    Transfer to a low heat and cook for an hour with the lid closed.

    It is advisable to place a kitchen towel or paper under the lid to absorb the steam and stir occasionally to create uniformity.
