Mexico-USA: a migratory agreement is urgent

2022-05-09T19:42:03.926Z

The drama of immigration forces the two countries to abandon their respective internal agendas and face a pact that regulates it

The bilateral agenda of Mexico and the United States is made up of many urgencies, but none like migration determines the daily relationship between the two countries.

The crisis at the border, where the US authorities detain more than 7,000 people every day, has strained the dialogue both with the Joe Biden Administration and with the Republican governors in favor of the militarization of controls.

The situation has become unsustainable and leads Washington to define without further delay a regulatory framework, for which it needs Mexico.

And if Donald Trump did it by way of imposition, Biden wants to negotiate a solution with his counterpart, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Reaching an agreement is not going to be easy, beginning with the hesitation of the White House.

The Democratic government planned to withdraw the so-called Title 42 at the end of May, a regulation approved by Trump in the midst of a pandemic that allows rapid deportations under health pretexts.

Republicans have made immigration pressure a flag to try to discredit Biden and threaten to seize Congress from Democrats, but Biden himself has already been in favor of maintaining that tool.

At the same time, López Obrador is facing this phenomenon with a series of open fronts with the US administration.

Some issues that he considers to be grievances and that range from security pressures to questions about his energy policy.

In recent days, the two leaders spoke by phone and Secretary of State Antony Blinken received a visit from Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.

They agreed on a joint plan to offer job opportunities in Central America and thus tackle the real structural causes of migration.

A US-Mexico migratory agreement is urgently required

Right to the northern triangle of that region, from where most of the migrants leave, to which are added tens of thousands of Haitians or Cubans, the Mexican president traveled on Thursday.

He did so with the promise of reinforcing the protection of the southern border, knowing that everything that happens there ends up having repercussions sooner or later on the northern border.

But before the visit, López Obrador also launched a dart at the United States, reproaching them for sending millions of dollars in aid to Ukraine while he has not yet authorized the investment of 4,000 million dollars in Central America.

The message was probably aimed more at his own supporters than at being useful in a diplomatic strategy.
