Stonehenge lights up in the colors of Queen Elizabeth II for her jubilee

The prehistoric site brings its stone to the festivities by adorning itself with portraits each representing a decade of its reign.


England is in turmoil ahead of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee festivities to be held from June 2-5.

Elizabeth II, who became the first British monarch on February 6 to celebrate her seventieth anniversary of reign, will be celebrated with great pomp.

To celebrate this unprecedented longevity, the English are thinking big, very big: four public holidays and several events throughout the kingdom.

The national mobilization does not spare Stonehenge and its mysterious stones.

"We have brought together two English icons to celebrate the platinum jubilee",

proudly announces on Twitter, the English Heritage association which manages and preserves the nearly 5000-year-old site.

The eight portraits, represent the queen on horseback, walking her corgis, where the day of her coronation in 1953. Each of the portraits represents a decade of her reign, including the one which opens now.

A jubilee under the sign of concern

The festivities, numerous, will begin on Thursday with the Queen's Birthday Parade, an annual parade of royal officers, riders and musicians attended by the royal family, known as "Trooping the Colour" (or "salute to the flag") .

Usually, the large balcony of Buckingham Palace from which the parade is observed, welcomes members of the royal family who are sometimes very distant from the queen.

This year, only active members of the royal family will be able to attend.

In a press release the palace announced that the presence of the queen at the jubilee festivities remained uncertain.
