The World Health Organization announced today that 780 confirmed cases of monkeypox have been recorded in 27 countries outside the countries where the disease is endemic, noting that the global risk level is still moderate.
And the French press agency quoted the organization as saying that “it is very likely that other countries will discover more cases of infection and spread of the virus,” noting that “only a few cases were recorded that necessitated the transfer of infected people to hospitals, as well as patients who are subject to health isolation.”
The organization referred to countries where the disease is not endemic, but which recorded the highest number of infections, namely Britain 207 injuries, Spain 156 and Portugal 138, while 58 cases were recorded in Canada and 57 in Germany.
In addition to Europe and America, injuries were recorded in single numbers in Argentina, Australia, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates.
The organization added, "It assesses the risk at the global level as being moderate, considering that it is the first time that this number of infection with the disease has been announced simultaneously, whether in countries where the disease is endemic or not.
Last week, the World Health Organization held an online meeting of more than 500 experts and 2,000 participants to discuss monkeypox, information gaps and research priorities.
