"Multiple" people were killed Thursday afternoon at a Maryland manufacturing plant after an armed assailant opened fire before being neutralized by police, local authorities said.
The shooting took place around 2:30 pm at the Columbia Machine plant, located in the city of Smithsburg, in Washington County (western Maryland).
The Washington County Sheriff's Office said there are "multiple deaths" but did not specify a number.
The suspect was shot and injured during a confrontation with a Maryland state trooper, the sheriff's office said.
The attacker was hospitalized, but his state of health is unclear at this time.
