Opinion | A responsible adult is needed: the right is losing direction Israel today

2022-07-14T21:02:32.756Z

The euphoria over the overthrow of the government was replaced by the gossip of some of the national camp parties • In the center-left bloc, on the other hand, lessons are being learned and organized effectively • and how Kalfon became Shaked's lifeline

There is something strange about the appearance in the play where troops are vigorously preparing for a battle that is expected to take place in just under four months.

But the current Israeli political system - as is well known - has its own laws, its own precedents and its own peculiarities.

Everything is unpredictable and the authority is not so given, and the political armies are already preparing for the day of battle in November.

And if we continue the war image, it will be possible to determine that as of this moment, the one that is better prepared is the just-not-Bibi bloc, known by the media as the "center-left bloc."

This is not obvious, since only a few weeks ago, when the outgoing hybrid coalition disintegrated, the right seemed to be the strong, organized and battle-ready bloc.

The forces seemed stable and orderly, Torah Judaism and Shas were stable in their sector, in religious Zionism they enjoyed flourishing in the polls and the Likud took its natural place as the leader of the bloc.

The center-left anti-Netanyahu, on the other hand, seems more battered and conflicted than ever.

Ganz against Lapid, who in turn plots on the seats of Michaeli, who in turn expresses alienation from Meretz.

The ideology sacrificed on the altar of "change" also ceased to be a factor, and the performance of government ministers was not one of the best.

Ladies and gentlemen, a makeover (in the campaign)

And suddenly everything turned upside down.

In the ultra-Orthodox camp, MK Moshe Gafni recently began enthusiastically silencing his messages ahead of the possible opening of the prime minister's door for Bnei Gantz, if Netanyahu does not reach the magic number 61. Alone, Gafni has always been perceived, In the political system, opinions are divided about the authenticity of heating up the relationship with Ganz: whether it is a cry for attention or a strategic move.

What is certain is that in reality Gafni holds at most 3-2 of the 16-15 joint seats of Shas and Torah Judaism. This sounds small, but in practice, in elections of the kind that excite us - this is a critical number. Netanyahu, and these are well felt throughout the bloc.

Another trouble comes from the direction of the Religious Zionist Party.

MKs Ben Gvir and Smutrich are waging a strange battle.

What seemed like a political honeymoon between the two, ran aground.

The background is, of course, a struggle for positions on the Knesset list.

Two hold the religious Zionist party and its success, at least in the polls, Ben Gvir says all mine and Bezalel does not return my calls, and Smutrich also claims all mine and if Itamar wants to speak he is welcome to call.

It is difficult to overstate the irresponsibility of the two hawks, literally.

Falling one of them below the blocking percentage will give power to the left almost automatically.

This week, Ben Gvir convened a press conference aimed at Smutrich, but his claims are not vague.

Smutrich, for his part, was interviewed against Ben Gvir without being able to explain exactly what the problem was.

The two, and the rest of the bloc's leaders, agree that a responsible adult is needed here who will prevent an electoral catastrophe and bring some peace and perhaps even wisdom to Smutrich and Ben Gvir.

Meanwhile, in the left camp, essays are actually being recorded.

Ganz and Saar teamed up this week and announced this to the public in a statement without questions from journalists.

A lot of sweet and airy cotton wool was spilled in this statement, but behind it is the interest in trying to threaten Yair Lapid in order to deprive him of legitimacy as the bloc's leader, and on the way to transfer the soft right-wing votes that do not like Netanyahu to the left bloc.

Bell was wrong: Saar does not suddenly think that Ganz is the right candidate for prime minister.

Only in the days leading up to the union announcement did he deny that such an idea was on the agenda or that contacts were taking place.

We urge you to stand up as a savior.

Zehava, back home

Yair Lapid, at this stage, is transmitting security.

He does not feel threatened and continues on his own, as someone who ran out of the Prime Minister's Office and was perceived as the leader of the bloc.

The polls do not herald a tectonic change in the face of the Gantz and Saar charisma bombs union, which looked paler than usual at the joint press conference.

But in a country where a person with five or six seats in the Knesset served as prime minister, even a double-digit number of seats could allow Lapid to be beheaded on the way to a new government headed by Ganz.

The only thing missing in the left-wing bloc at the moment is the situation of Meretz and the Labor Party.

To the dismay of Meretz members, the one who might benefit from Horowitz's retirement from the race to head the party is Yair Golan.

Meretz is begging, not to mention begging Zehava Gal-On to stand up as a savior, for fear that Golan, the occupation officer, the nationalist in the eyes of many Meretz members, will finally bury the party.

There, too, they realized that tongue-in-cheek, comparing leftists to oppressed black slaves or Jews to Nazis would not necessarily help in the war against the blocking percentage.

Despite the situation, Merav Michaeli, who is expected to win the leadership of the Labor Party again, completely denies the unification of the far-left wing in the center-right bloc.

The bloc estimates that as the days go by and the danger intensifies, so too will it be resolved.

The most apocalyptic scenario rests on the certain assessment that Ganz and Lapid will strive to drink as much as possible the voices of Meretz and Labor, and thus the two parties together will fall below the blocking percentage.

And the one who is currently out of the game is Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked, who - if you forgot - also serves as chairman of the right-wing party, the ruling party until yesterday, which today receives at least two percent support in polls.

In the cliff of times, Shaked was forced to present an ace this week, and fortunately one of them happened to her: following the resignation of Amichai Shikli from the Knesset, MK Yom Tov Kalfon returned to it. For now, recruiting new and attractive candidates for the list says a lot about how the political system evaluates its chances.

In light of this, Shaked hurried to take a photo with Kalfon and shower him with praise and compliments on social media.

It will be recalled that only two months ago, Bennett, Kahana and Shaked fired Kalfon from the Knesset by surprise in an attempt to preserve the coalition.

Now Shaked, the former right-wing princess and who was marked as the right-wing leadership reserve, is holding on to Kalfon like a lifeline.

It is not at all clear which of them is in greater distress.

Were we wrong?
