Within the departments of restoration laboratories in the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums, about 50 students from the Technical Institute of Archeology and Museums experienced the restoration and maintenance of artifacts through a summer production camp at the National Museum in Damascus.

During the camp, which came under the supervision of the cadres of the Directorate of Antiquities and Museums, the students acquired skills of excavation, restoration and maintenance of artifacts in a systematic manner that simulates the management of excavations and methodologies for documenting discoveries, in addition to documentation, photography, maintenance, restoration and preservation of artifacts. Some of them will participate in engineering lifting and building documentation.

Director General of Antiquities and Museums Nazir Awad stressed in a statement to SANA reporter the importance of the training camp for students, which included training on systematic excavation, documentation, photography and restoration of antiquities of all kinds, in the Directorate of Laboratories, which are equipped with modern equipment and devices and under the supervision of Syrian experts in all areas of restoration of artifacts extracted from fossils.

Awad said: Syria possesses a capable and experienced team in restoring archaeological and historical buildings, and it is capable of restoring castles, buildings and cities, as is happening in Damascus and Aleppo, indicating that the goal of the training is to provide students with skills that enable them to engage in field work in the future.

Awad pointed out that national expertise can restore all pieces, regardless of their material and type, because they have undergone training courses abroad with the help of friendly countries.

In turn, the director of the technical laboratory in the Directorate of Scientific and Restorative Laboratories, Yasser Yousef, explained that the laboratories of the National Museum include two sections: a “reconstructive” section capable of dealing with murals, organic materials, wood and all kinds of metals, pottery, glass, cuneiform figures, icons and mosaics .. and a “chemical” section that depends on the analysis of samples for materials. used in renovations.

Youssef pointed out that the students of the camp were briefed on all the restoration laboratories, indicating that the distinguished student will continue training throughout the summer.

For her part, Trainer Ragaa Murshid, an expert in the restoration of murals, announced that she trained the students in the camp through field work outside the laboratory in an Arab house containing damaged drawings that were documented before and after work.

Morshed indicated that the camp was diversified with work and exercises, and the focus was on basic information that enriches and develops students' knowledge.
