A spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, Zhou Fenglian, on Thursday reiterated China's strong opposition to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's plan to visit China's Taiwan region.
"We firmly oppose any official exchange between the United States and Taiwan," Zhou was quoted as saying by Xinhua, adding that the recent comments and provocative actions of some members of the US Congress are nothing but attempts to obstruct China's reunification process.
Zhou urged relevant US congressmen to understand the high sensitivity of the Taiwan issue, stop provocations, and refrain from providing any support to separatist elements calling for the so-called "Taiwan independence."
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a press conference yesterday that his country urges the United States to abide by the one-China principle and the three Sino-US joint communiques, calling on it to stop its military relations with Taiwan and stop raising tensions in this strait.
