Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer has been sharply criticized for his suggestion that Germany should mediate in the Ukraine war.

"Ukrainians advocate sticking your head in a freezer to freeze your hot Russian fantasies," Andriy Melnyk tweeted.

And referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin, he went on to say: "Your constant pandering to the war criminal Putin is disgusting." Melnyk was the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany.

A week and a half ago he was dismissed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

On his Twitter account, Melnyk still calls himself "Ambassador of Ukraine in Germany."

FDP General Secretary Bijan Djir-Sarai commented on Kretschmer's words in the "Bild" newspaper: "Thank God this man is not responsible for our foreign policy." how important the support for Ukraine«.

Berlin CDU country chief Kai Wegner wrote on Twitter: “Like Michael Kretschmer, we all want peace, freedom and security in the world.

But Michael Kretschmer also knows that this is not possible with the warmonger and war criminal Putin.«

The CDU member of the Bundestag Matthias Hauer explained on Twitter that Kretschmer's position was not one - only "warmonger Putin" could freeze his war of aggression.

Anyone who, like Kretschmer, suggests that other countries could do this is falling for Russian propaganda.

Kretschmer declared on Tuesday that Germany must play a mediating role in the war.

He justified this primarily with the size of the country and its history.

They were very involved in the European association, but had to play a central role in resolving the conflict together with France, the USA and other countries.

"We must work to freeze this war."

That doesn't mean that Ukraine should give up territories, said Kretschmer.

Russia's war is an injustice and a crime.

But one must recognize that the war is throwing the entire world, and Europe in particular, into chaos.

If it continues like this, there is a risk of losing the economic strength that is necessary to organize security and remain competitive.

According to Kretschmer, Germany and Europe must clarify their position on this war.

He currently understands the statements that firstly it is about winning the war and secondly never to buy raw materials from Russia again.

If that is the attitude, there will be no ceasefire negotiations.

“I firmly believe that we need these supplies of raw materials.

Secondly, I am of the opinion that we must try together (...) to influence the Russian President and also to convince Ukraine that we all have to freeze this conflict together.

This is different from what is currently going on.«
