The five occupants of the same car died after an accident on a freeway in Miami, Florida, which involved another vehicle traveling at high speed in the opposite direction, the Florida Highway Patrol reported Saturday.
The fatal victims of the accident on the Palmetto Expressway were
four women and one man, between the ages of 18 and 25
.
As of Saturday afternoon, authorities had not released their identities.
The accident occurred around 4:30 am Saturday, when a silver Infiniti sedan was traveling in the opposite direction of traffic and collided head-on with a gray Honda sedan, authorities said.
Both vehicles were completely destroyed and the accident caused the partial closure of the highway, one of the busiest in South Florida, the Palmetto Expressway.
A fire brigade responded to the scene, but none of the occupants of the Honda car survived.
The man who was driving the wrong-way Infiniti was trapped inside the car after the crash and firefighters were able to get him out alive and take him to an area hospital, where he is in critical condition, authorities said.

rescue a victim who was trapped in her vehicle,” said Marc Chavers, Miami County Fire Department Division Chief. Dade.
"Unfortunately, there were no survivors in the other vehicle."

Authorities identified
Maiky Simeon
, 40, as the driver traveling facing traffic.
Simeon, according to court records cited by the local newspaper Miami Herald, has a history of traffic violations, including speeding, driving without proof of insurance, without a license and illegal use of license plates.
A criminal investigation is underway to clarify the circumstances of the accident, according to authorities.
