As of 2021, there are more than 70,000 lifts and about 10,000 elevators in Hong Kong. In order to improve the safety of lifts and elevators, the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department has developed an intelligent lift movement monitoring device (i-EMSD) and intelligent digital escalators

As of 2021, there are more than 70,000 lifts and about 10,000 elevators in Hong Kong. In order to improve the safety of lifts and elevators, the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department has developed an intelligent lift movement monitoring device (i-EMSD) and an intelligent digital escalator monitoring system (i-EMSD). -DEMS).

Among them, i-DEMS can automatically collect real-time operation data of key elevator components such as step reels and comb plates. When there is damage, the person in charge and maintenance personnel can be notified for maintenance. The system has been applied to 15 elevators in Hong Kong. Including the Langham Place mall where an elevator accident happened in 2017.

In addition, i-EMSD uses AI and image analysis technology to monitor the data of elevator movement in real time. When there is an inaccurate car leveling, it can issue an alarm to ensure the safety of users.

i-DEMS (Intelligent Digital Escalator Monitoring System) is an intelligent digital escalator monitoring system. It is a digital system that integrates fiber gratings and other high-precision sensors. It can automatically collect elevators such as driving devices, handrails, step reels and comb plates. The operation data of key components is machine-learned, which uses cloud computing technology to identify pre-failure signals, and then uses the app to notify the person in charge and maintenance personnel to perform predictive maintenance work more efficiently.

i-DEMS can monitor whether the speed of the steps and handrails of the elevator are consistent

The whole system can analyze the operation of different key parts of the elevator in real time, such as whether the speed of the handrail is consistent with that of the steps, the degree of corrosion of the step reels, whether there are foreign hard objects on the comb plate, and the operation status of the drive system, etc. Insignificant wear and tear can be detected, and preventive maintenance is carried out.

i-DEMS adopts a non-invasive design, which will not affect the normal operation of the elevator, nor will it affect its application due to the elevator brand. The system has been installed on 15 escalators for trial use in the past two years, including the elevator slippage in 2017. After the accident, Langham Place shopping mall also has outdoor escalators such as automatic pedestrian elevators in the middle of the mountain, which greatly reduces the accidents related to mechanical parts.

In addition, i-DEMS will also be installed at the pedestrian link facility at Anderson Road in Kwun Tong, and the elevators across the Castle Peak Road footbridge in Tsuen Wan.

i-EMSD can detect whether there is any error between the elevator and the outer door of the floor, prompting passengers to be careful of tripping

In addition, the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department has developed the i-EMSD (Intelligent Elevator Movement Surveillance Device), which uses AI and image analysis technology to monitor the physical and mechanical data of lifts in real time during movement. Inaccuracy, abnormal vibration or movement, etc., can predict accidents and issue alarms to ensure the safety of users.

i-EMSD analyzes the vertical distance between the fuselage and the outer door of the floor in real time through the infrared lens. If the leveling error exceeds a certain distance, a siren will be issued to remind passengers to be careful of tripping.

In addition, if there is abnormal movement of the elevator car and vibration data, etc., it can also be collected through the system. After AI analysis, the parts that may be damaged can be detected in advance, so that maintenance personnel can make maintenance and repairs.

Currently, two lifts at the EMSD headquarters have been installed for testing and machine learning, and two lifts at Pokfulam and Kwai Chung Vocational Training Council will be installed for teaching purposes. The device is for trial nature.

The two studies have won 5 local short-term patents and multiple awards

i-DEMS and i-EMSD have successively won 5 local short-term patents, 3 gold medals at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva and the 2022 champion of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers' Electronics Project Competition. In addition, they have also been gradually adopted and applied by elevator and elevator managers.

The prices of i-DEMS and i-EMSD are $50,000 and $10,000 respectively. Au Ziwei, Senior Electrical and Mechanical Engineer of the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, pointed out that both sets of devices can effectively predict accidents. security.
