The Australian Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, announced tonight (Tuesday) in an official statement that the country no longer recognizes West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The minister said that the issue should be resolved through peace talks between the Palestinian and Jewish sides.

"Australia is committed to a two-state solution, in which Israel and a future Palestinian state coexist, in peace and security, within internationally recognized borders," Wong said during a media briefing, "we will not support an approach that undermines that prospect."

Finally, the minister added that "the Australian embassy in Israel will remain, as it has always been, in Tel Aviv."

The foreign minister's statement comes in contrast to a statement given in 2018 by the conservative government of former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

As part of the statement, Morrison declared that "Australia recognized West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, being the seat of the Knesset and many of the institutions of the Israeli government."

However, yesterday this announcement was deleted from the website of the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Also, the foreign minister's statement comes in contrast to Morrison's statement, who said in 2018 that he intends to move the Australian embassy in Israel to West Jerusalem "after determining the final status of the two-state solution".

Even at the time of Morrison's announcement, Wong said that she does not support the decision, and intends to cancel it when a government is formed.

The spokesperson of the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that "the government continues to consider the final status of Jerusalem, as an issue that can be resolved within the framework of peace negotiations"
