Mogadishu-SANA
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) today warned of unprecedented death rates in Somalia due to severe malnutrition suffered by children.
"If the situation in Somalia does not change, the world will witness a level of child mortality not seen in half a century," said Victor Chinyama, a UNICEF spokesman.
Chinyama pointed out that "Somalia is facing the worst drought in years, which will exacerbate other problems."
"In Somalia, every minute of every day, one child is admitted to a medical facility due to severe malnutrition," UNICEF revealed in a statement on its website.
The statement pointed out that "44,000 Somali children have been monitored suffering from acute malnutrition since last August."
