The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees announced the death of three people and the infection of 39 others with cholera in the Minawao refugee camp in the far north of Cameroon, expressing concern about the spread of the disease.
And Agence France-Presse quoted the UNHCR as saying in a statement today: that as of yesterday, 24 of 39 patients were receiving treatment in health facilities in Minawao, noting that the patients were in serious condition, while 12 recovered and returned to their homes.
The UNHCR pointed out that the sources of drinking water and sanitation infrastructure have become insufficient, in light of the increase in the population of the camp, which has nearly doubled since 2015 to reach about 75,000 people.
Cholera reappears periodically in Cameroon, which is located in central Africa and has a population of about 25 million people.
It is noteworthy that the Minawao camp, located about thirty kilometers from the border with Nigeria, was opened in July 2013 at the height of the crisis to respond to the massive influx of Nigerian refugees into the country.
