Media around the world commented tonight (light for Wednesday) on the apparent victory of the Netanyahu bloc in the Knesset elections.
The American news network CNN reported that Netanyahu is "on the way to a comeback" while the FOX news network quoted senior Likud officials who predicted that Netanyahu would form a government.
Media outlets associated with the left in the West described the Netanyahu bloc as a bloc in alliance with the extreme right and the American newspaper "New York Times" reported an "unprecedented achievement" for the extreme right in Israel in reference to the results of the polls that predicted 14 mandates for the "Religious Zionist" party.
"Mr. Netanyahu's bloc includes an extreme right-wing party that seeks to undermine the Israeli justice system, end Palestinian autonomy in parts of the occupied West Bank, and allow in law the type of corruption in which Netanyahu is accused. The bloc includes two ultra-Orthodox parties that oppose the secular way of life in Israel," says the New York Times".
The German newspaper "Bild" reported: "Netanyahu needs the support of the religious list coalition and the ultra-Orthodox in order to form a government. The duo Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir are interested in annexing the entire West Bank and tonight became the third largest faction in the Israeli parliament."
In the media in Russia, Netanyahu received much more sympathetic coverage, with several media outlets, including the "Vashi Novosti" news site, describing Netanyahu as a "friend of Russia" and claiming that the two countries would be able, under Netanyahu's rule, to return to normal diplomatic relations.
