The outgoing president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, did not recognize the results of the elections in which he was defeated by former president Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, after a close second round held this Sunday.
After almost two days of silence and with protests from his supporters in the streets of the country, the outgoing president declared from the Alvorada Palace that he will continue
"fulfilling all the mandates of the Constitution."
Bolsonario, who took office in 2019, lost the presidential election with 49.1% to Lula da Silva's 50.9%.
"Contrary to what my opponents say, I always played within the limits of our Constitution," Bolsonaro told reporters on Tuesday, acknowledging his opponent's victory.
